Route Section: alternatively marks start of Westmorland Loop.

  • Westmorland Loop at 98km (61m) is 13km (8m) longer than going to Stanhope via Hartside. It is more remote and, in its way, a greater challenge.

Directions

  • Out of Troutbeck follow the old road which runs above the A66.

  • Continue straight on at the Sportsman's Inn to Penruddock.

  • Follow the road down to the A66 which you will now cross. Slightly to the right but almost opposite, the route continues.

  • Cycle through the tiny cluster of houses at Hutton to the T-junction, where you turn right and (briefly) onto Route 71.

  • Go through Sparket Mill but do not to take the left fork (signed Route 71) but instead continue for 3km to the A592 where you turn left for Pooley Bridge.


About Penruddock

Penruddock means Red Hill in the ancient patois of Cumbric. The soild and sandstone in the area is famously brick red. It is in the civic parish of Hutton and is a peaceful, still point.
